How We Help By Customer Type

MNO icon-01

A Mobile Network Operator (MNO) owns the complete telecom infrastructure for hosting and managing mobile communications between mobile subscribers as well as with wired telecom networks. Key Challenges include:

Support/preserve messaging revenue – SMS continues to sustain significant revenue for MNO’s, driven by continued growth of the global mobile subscriber base, Application-to Person (alerts, promotional messages) and Person-to-Application (check balance, opt-in, voting) SMS.

In many cases legacy SMSC/MMSC infrastructure is constrained by hardware and software approaching end of life, and challenges with converting to IP.

How We Help – Lithium (SMSC) and Mercury (MMSC) provide a modular architecture that enables MNO’s to efficiently support existing SMS revenue.

  • Lithium eliminates SMS bottlenecks and SMSC capacity utilization issues with advanced load balancing and throughput control techniques.
  • Supports HTTP, SMPP, UCP, and CIMD2 to integrate growing A2P and P2A SMS services with scalability required for surges characteristic of these applications.
  • Bridge SMS between circuit-switched and IP networks with the Lithium IP-SM Gateway (IP-SM-GW) deployed with a Lithium SMSC or as a stand-alone IP-SM-GW.

Reduce Costs – Increasing competition from operators of all types as well as Over The Top (OTT) applications are adding pressure to reduce pricing and increase operational efficiency. Additionally, legacy systems are frequently dimensioned at past peak SMS traffic.

How We Help – NewNet messaging platforms Lithium (SMS) and Mercury (MMS) are software-based solutions that assist MNO’s with cost reduction while adding more effective services. Efficiency is realized via:

  • Value Added Services (VAS) Consolidation – NewNet’s platform allows MNO’s to replace what is frequently 3-5 legacy messaging systems with a single NewNet platform with cost savings that can approach 40%.
  • Lithium Firewall with Advanced Filters – SMS Spoofing, faking and flooding are detected and blocked, eliminating costs for message transport where the MNO cannot charge for unsolicited (SPAM) messages from (non-traceable) foreign networks and subscribers.
  • Reduce churn – Lithium and Mercury enable personalized services such as private message boxes, message archiving etc. to keep subscribers loyal, avoiding the high cost of attracting new customers to compensate for those leaving for a competitor.

Add New Services – MNO’s are facing the threat of simply becoming pipes between increasingly more capable mobile devices.    Battling the specter of commodity pricing and lack of differentiation with new services will offer more reasons for users to become or remain subscribers.

How We Help – NewNet messaging platforms Lithium (SMS) and Mercury (MMS) are software-based solutions that assist MNO’s with cost reduction while adding more effective services.   Efficiency is realized via:

  • Lithium and Mercury – Ad insertion and personalized services including distribution lists, black & white lists, parental control, forwarding, auto reply, auto signature, and others make it easy for MNO’s to differentiate and encourage loyalty for SMS and MMS.
  • Promote Self-service campaigns – NewNet’s Mercury Composer and Campaign Manager make it easy for business subscribers to create, schedule and report on their MMS push, pull or combo (e.g. quizzes) campaigns.

MVNO icon-01

A Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) is a wireless communications service provider that does not own a complete wireless network infrastructure. MVNO’s are allowed, through regulations and agreements with MNOs, to provide mobile services on top of a MNO infrastructure.

MVNOs typically aim for specific subscriber groups and tailor their services and marketing for specific interests with an emphasis on cost savings.  Key challenges include:

Ease of integration and control – A large engineering team is not characteristic of the typical MVNO.   As a result, ease of integration, management and reporting is essential.

How We Help – NewNet messaging platforms Lithium (SMS) and Mercury (MMS) are software-based solutions NewNet’s Lithium, Mercury and Krypton platforms allow MVNO’s to:

  • Consolidate their legacy SMS and MMS services frequently from multiple vendors within a unified NewNet platform.
  • Work with a consistent API framework to makes it easy to integrate with an MNO’s infrastructure.

Addition of New Services – MVNO’s generally need to stay on par or ahead of the market with new services to effectively compete against MNO’s and other MVNO’s.

How We Help – NewNet platforms make it easy to add new features as well as efficiently scale for a volume of traffic that may start out small but could ramp or spike significantly.

  • A2P and P2A – SMS message growth is found in the Application to Person (A2P) and Person to Application (P2A) within business accounts. NewNet’s Lithium SMSC Application Gateway makes it easy for MVNO’s to customize management and control for SMS one-time passwords (OTPs), scheduling, reporting, and other A2P and P2A requirements.
  • Multimedia – Mercury enables MVNOs to launch multimedia services including mobile advertising, streaming media, and premium content subscription services. Mercury’s ViralTrack provides insight on MMS reach beyond the initial message.

Operational Efficiency – Efficiency is an especially critical component for MVNO success as many of their service delivery elements are controlled by an MNO.   NewNet provides a number of MVNO benefits that help reduce costs as well as provide an infrastructure that adds to an MNO’s resources.

How We Help – Reducing Total Cost of Ownership for MVNO’s is achieved by deploying messaging and video services that replace a mix of vendors or are controlled by an MNO.

  • A single blade solution – The compact Lithium SMS infrastructure is a perfect fit for MVNOs who want to control and deliver their own SMS traffic in a small form factor.
  • Small footprint with scalability – NewNet’s SMS and MMS can be consolidated within a small server deployment. This allows MVNOs to offer comprehensive communication services for a smaller population of subscribers with a path to grow without exorbitant upgrade requirements.
  • Capacity Scaling – The introduction of the modular IP based Lithium, Mercury and Krypton network elements ensures that the MVNO can cost effectively follow the demand curve by simply activating more capacity licenses.

inter carriers icon-01

Inter Carriers allow network operators and service providers to offer their customers voice, data, and video on 3G and 4G networks spanning global operators.  Inter Carriers transport the international SMS traffic for the roaming subscribers of the MNOs. Trust, Reliability and Security are keywords for this segment.  Key challenges include:

Spamming & Security – Inter carriers are concerned with SPAM traffic causing unnecessary usage of core network resources and signaling network elements.   SPAM is also a subscriber churn accelerator, creating problems for MNO’s.  Virus’s contact premium phone number are high visibility problems that need to be avoided at all costs.

How We Help – NewNet provides a range of ant-spam and security solutions as part of its messaging platforms as well as standalone products:

  • SMS Firewall – In addition to the basic SS7 level detection and filtering, the SMS Firewall offers protection with filters that provide deep SMS message inspection, such as content filtering, anti-flooding and pattern detection.
  • Firewall Protection for MNO partners – The NewNet SMS Firewall supports virtualization techniques so that Inter Carriers can deliver a NewNet-based, virtualized SMS Firewall to network operators who want to outsource part of their SMS security environment.

Reduce Total Cost of Ownership – Many Inter Carriers are dealing with a VAS infrastructure that has evolved over time.   Disparate systems from a variety of vendors create unnecessary management overhead, maintenance fees that do not reflect current traffic conditions, and difficulty with supporting new functionality.

How We Help – NewNet’s platforms make it easy for Inter Carriers to transition from a costly vendor diverse infrastructure to a modular platform with a GUI management interface that consolidated management and reporting across many systems.    Scaling upwards or downwards to varying traffic conditions to facilitate multi-MNO management with cost savings.

  • Operational efficiency – Consolidation of SMS and MMS within the Lithium and Mercury platforms also make it easier to manage SLA’s and control all aspects of load balancing and reporting via web-based GUIs.
  • Scale to match volume – Switching to a NewNet platform will allow the Inter Carrier to adapt the required TPS levels (upwards or downwards) – based upon traffic predictions. In both cases a reduction in cost (CAPEX & OPEX) are realized compared to the traditional platforms.
  • Virtualization – NewNet messaging platforms (Lithium & Mercury) are software based solutions. The software is deployed on standard COTS (commercial off-the-shelf ) hardware, and supports Network Functions Virtualization (NFV).

New Service Opportunities – Inter Carriers are a trusted party for MNO/MVNOs.  In this role Inter Carriers can step beyond the threat of commodity transport with new services hosted for MNO’s and MVNO’s.

How We Help – Inter Carriers can deploy NewNet modular components to offer services to MNO’s and MVNO’s.  Examples include:

  • SMS Firewall – Some MNOs do not have the resources (manpower, skillset) to maintain security services, especially for legacy systems. The Lithium SMS firewall will deliver updated security for messaging, and can be provided by Inter Carriers as a service for MNO’s and MVNO’s.
  • MMS Campaigns as a Service – The Mercury Composer and Campaign Manager can be offered by Inter Carriers as a self-service tool for creating and managing MMS campaigns generated by business customers of MNO’s and MVNO’s.
