NewNet Partners with CALLUP and Neusoft to Address Growing Demand for VoWiFi and Enhanced Chat- December 3, 2015

NewNet integrates with Android client apps to provide cellular operators with a complete solution for new VoWiFi and enhanced Chat and SMS based on RCS

Chicago, IL – NewNet Communications Technologies, a global leader in mobility technologies, CALLUP, a provider of Value Added Services (VAS) and Mobile Device Management (MDM) for the telecom industry and Neusoft Mobile Solutions, a provider of IP communication client solutions, today announced a strategic partnership. Under the agreement, NewNet will integrate CALLUP’s Wi-Fi Calling and Neusoft ChatSMS rich communications clients into NewNet’s Krypton line of messaging products for video share, location share and chat via Wi-Fi hotspots. NewNet partners with these client vendors to offer the combined solution worldwide. The solution is currently deployed at Teleena in the Netherlands

Poor cellular phone coverage in buildings is one of the most critical problems for mobile communications today. CALLUP resolves this issue with an Android client that works with NewNet’s Krypton RCS platform to allow subscribers to take advantage of WiFi hotspot connectivity. An installed Android CALLUP app seamlessly intercepts voice call requests and routes them via the (home) Wi-Fi router to the carrier’s Krypton RCS-solution. Algorithms inspect IP quality and Wi-Fi signal performance prior to call initiation to ensure quality. In addition, calls placed to the handset are also attempted over Wi-Fi when the client is connected and registered, enabling IP-based quality and cost savings. Quality control algorithms again allow the call to be received over Wi-Fi or signal back to the network when it’s better to receive the call over the mobile network in poor Wi-Fi conditions.

“WI-FI calling empowers operators with the ability to directly enhance loyalty via a service that delivers improved voice and messaging quality plus cost savings to their subscribers” said Alon Roth, CALLUP’s CEO. “CALLUP’s integration with NewNet’s Krypton RCS platform also enables operators to provide a compelling alternative to OTT competitors while ensuring a seamless upgrade path when native RCS handsets becomes prevalent”.

The Neusoft ChatSMS client provides subscribers with an OTT like chat service app (chat-app) which also includes Video-Share, Location-Share and File-Share. Neusoft’s ChatSMS client in combination with the Krypton RCS platform provides a way for operators to deploy GSMA Association’s joyn℠ and also add RCS functionality to 3G/4G/LTE/WI-FI networks.

“Neusoft’s ChatSMS client in combination with the Krypton RCS platform and its SMS support makes this chat-app instantly able to communicate with 7 billion subscribers around the globe,” said Markus Jakobsson, Neusoft’s Sales and Product Manager. “Operators can step beyond OTT chat silo-ed alternatives with seamless bi-directional chat to SMS that subscribers will appreciate for its geographic reach and service independent mobility.”

In addition Neusoft has packaged its ChatSMS app for Android with a Service Ribbon which allows seamless use of enriched services during any mobile or VoWIFI call. The Service Ribbon displays three overlay buttons enriching the mobile or Wi-Fi call with video, chat or location capabilities.

“Innovative communication such as VoWiFi and next generation chat are clear examples of services that benefit subscribers and mobile operators,” said Jonathan Huberman, NewNet’s president and CEO. “NewNet’s Krypton RCS platform in partnership with smartphone client apps from CALLUP and Neusoft allow mobile operators to cost-effectively encourage subscriber loyalty, stand out from OTT competition, and increase bottomline success.”

NewNet’s Krypton IP communication platform is based on GSMA’s RCS 5.2 standard. Krypton allows operators to deploy VoIP and Video Calling, Video Sharing, Instant Messaging, Web Real-Time Communication (WebRTC) solutions, RCS Network API, Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) Presence enabler, Common Message Store, Best Efforts Voice, VoLTE, Wi-Fi offload, and seamless IP to SMS integration functionality with or without an IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) core. Mobile Asia Expo 2014

Highlights – Green Button Promise Comes Alive at Mobile Asia Expo 2014

Mobile Asia Expo was a landmark for the Network 2020 Programme with five live, LTE-based native demonstrations of the ‘Green Button Promise’ in action from China Mobile, D2 Technologies and NewNet (formerly NewPace), Jibe Mobile, Huawei and Summit Tech. As native implementations, they all made the user experience so straightforward because they were close to the operating heart of the device and not as a downloadable app – so choosing voice or video and adding in other rich services like chat, picture and file sharing was simplicity itself. And when a communications service is simple, customers tend to like using it. Good news for operators.

The Green Button Promise so important to operators because it is fundamental in regaining customer relevance against all the alternative OTT service offerings that are impacting the operator’s business today. It refers to an extension of the customer experience they enjoyed with mobile voice calls, historically initiated using a green call button on their device. Delivering the reach to contacts regardless of location and enjoying reliable communications in calls is expanded to cover the whole user experience of rich IP-based communications on different devices – messaging, RCS, video-based calling and VoLTE calls.

The Green Button Promise demos from operators and leading vendors included:

  • China Mobile – A native experience demo of ‘New Call, New Messages, New Contacts’ as announced at MWC2014 – using an LTE network;
  • D2 Technologies & NewNet – A VoLTE/RCS native experience on a live LTE network using a very smart little LTE Femtocell on the GSMA Pavilion;
  • Jibe Mobile – Hosted IP communications/RCS solution for operators who want to decrease the time to market for new service launches;
  • Huawei – ‘V2oLTE’ = Voice + Video over LTE: HD video call & smart embedded solutions (a smart entry system); and
  • Summit Tech – A native implementation of voice and video communications plus many Enterprise segment applications for typical business communications, such as conference calling with video.

Network 2020 highlights from Mobile Asia Expo

Pushing forward to meet the Programme’s targets for launches was a priority for operator engagement at the event. Team members met with China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom, FarEasTone, Orange & StarHub during the show.

Our other points of presence included live demonstrations of High Definition Voice by Qualcomm in the Connected City and a challenging presentation by Dr. Xiongyan Tang of China Unicom: ‘Openness and Cooperation: Achieving a Win-Win for Telco and OTT’.

D2 and NewPace Demonstrate Rich IMS Mobile Communications Experience at Mobile Asia Expo 2014 – June 11, 2014

Joint IMS mobile solution delivers VoLTE (IR.92) with simultaneous ViLTE (IR.94) and rich communication services (RCS)

Shanghai (Mobile Asia Expo 2014) and Santa Barbara, CA – June 11, 2014 — D2 Technologies, the market leader in embedded IP communications software platforms, and NewPace Technology Development Inc., recently acquired by NewNet Communications Technologies, B.V., announced today that they are showcasing an implementation of the GSMA’s Network 2020 “green button” mobile network. This live demonstration seamlessly combines comprehensive Rich Communication Services (RCS), VoLTE (IR.92) and ViLTE (IR.94) video call using Node-H’s LTE femtocell during Mobile Asia Expo 2014. The conference opens today at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC) and runs through June 13.

NewPace and D2 successfully completed end-to-end IMS interoperability testing of the joint solution, ensuring mobile network operators receive complete IMS functionality as they transition legacy voice services to LTE and begin to offer RCS, VoLTE and ViLTE (Video over LTE) via IMS.

“This demonstration provides operators a live experience of the mobile network of the future, where voice, data, video, and rich communication services are all natively embedded on mobile devices as a compelling product suite using modern IP technology,” said Brent Newsome, Vice President of Business Development, NewNet Messaging Business Unit. “It also demonstrates the versatility of NewPace’s RCS platform to operate in IMS and LTE environments.”

NewPace and NewNet’s portfolio of solutions includes a complete suite of RCS 5.1 services including: presence, instant messaging, group chat, file transfer, VoIP (IR.92) and video calling (IR.94), inter-operator routing (IR.90), IP Short-message Gateway (IP-SM-GW) and RCS network API solutions for mobile operators.  This portfolio is unique in its ability to be deployed inside a mobile operator’s existing IMS network, alternatively as a stand-alone application in 2G and 3G networks for those who have not yet deployed IMS functionality, or as a hosted solution integrated with the operator network.

The Node-H LTE software runs on Broadcom’s LTE System-on-a-Chip, and supports 150Mbps downlink and 50Mbps uplink. The software targets residential and enterprise small cells. It incorporates solutions for Radio Resource Management, Self-Organizing Networks, Interference Management and Coordination, and it connects to the Evolved Packet Core through the standardized S1 interface, as well as supporting the X2 interface for intercell communication.

“We’re very happy to co-operate with D2 and Newpace to demonstrate that VoLTE is available and working right now,” said Mike Cronin, CEO of Node-H. “The seamless integration of VoLTE with other IMS services such as IR.94 and RCS all running over an LTE dedicated bearer provides the carrier-grade quality of service that subscribers demand.”

D2’s mCUE 4G is the most advanced IMS IP communications software solution for the Android OS platform, supporting the IR.92 VoLTE, IR.94 video calls and RCS (5.1 and joyn) GSMA standards to deliver IP communications features like HD voice, real time video call, instant message, presence, SMS and VCC on 3G, 4G LTE, and Wi-Fi networks. As the first IP communications client deployed by a 4G mobile operator, it is field proven and delivers carrier-grade voice and video quality, and demonstrated interoperability. mCUE 4G is a complete communications client, providing all key layers from the UI and protocol stacks, a fully embedded media engine that includes a complete VoIP DSP module with wideband CODECs, and optimized video framework integration that supports native hardware video acceleration. It is available in both embedded (native) and downloadable App versions, and is GSMA joyn Accredited.

“Now that VoLTE is gaining mainstream market adoption, D2 and partners such as NewPace and Node-H are leading the way in creating technology that delivers the next big thing in communications for subscribers,” said Doug Makishima, chief operating officer for D2 Technologies. “Operators can now meet customer demand for ease of use by layering ViLTE video calling and RCS to create an integrated and seamless ‘green button’ experience.”

Visitors to Mobile Asia Expo can view a demo of mCUE 4G running on a Google Nexus 5 by LG Android™ phone connecting to an IMS enabled RCS server from NewPace Technology via a Node-H LTE femtocell at the GSMA Network 2020 exhibit hall or by contacting D2 Technologies at marketing@d2tech.com.

NewNet SMS Firewall Protects Networks from SIM Card Security Breaches

By Rachel Ramsey, TMCnet Web Editor

Mobility has become a common part of everyday life for both consumers and enterprises alike. However, as most technology areas are revealing, security remains one of the top concerns and hackers and cyber criminals continue to discover ways to take advantage of loosely enforced security provisions. Research from the International Association of IT Asset Managers (IAITAM) found that 51 percent of organizations have a bring your own device (BYOD) program that allows employees to use their personal mobile devices for work purposes, and out of the employees who access the enterprise remotely, slightly more than half use a secure key or digital pass, while 49 percent use a login name and password on a secure site.

People have a right to be concerned about the security on their mobile devices. Recently, the founder of Security Research Labs in Berlin, Karsten Nohl, found a security flaw that potentially opens up around 750 million SIM cards to hackers and cyber criminals who could obtain a SIM Card’s 56-digit digital key, which then opens the SIM card for modification. That then allows hackers to send a virus to a mobile phone via an SMS which would enable them to eavesdrop on a caller, make purchases through mobile payment systems on behalf of the phone owner or even impersonate the phone’s owner.

NewNet (News – Alert) Communication Technologies, a provider of next-generation mobile and fixed line networks solutions, offers a mobile messaging firewall feature that solves the SIM card messaging security breach and provides security, reliability and scalability to customers. The NewNet SMS Firewall works with most of the major SMS installations from other vendors and is already deployed with major carriers around the world to protect the network and their respective subscribers from this security breach.

The SMS Firewall supports advanced filtering and blocking to prevent unwanted SMS messages. With enhanced load distribution and throughput control, it provides overload protection from signaling system 7 (SS7) and Internet protocol (IP) message originators. The system’s SS7 routing and screening capabilities are based on user-definable rules that filter any incoming SMS message. In addition to the basic SS7 level detection and filtering, the SMS Firewall also provides protection through optional, intelligent modular filters, which provide deep SMS message inspection, such as content filtering, anti-flooding and pattern detection. “I believe this solution opens the door to help customers, worldwide, solve a potential problem in their networks,” said Krishna Viswanadham, GM of the NewNet Messaging Business Unit.

When combining the NewNet SMS Firewall with NewNet’s Personalized Services, additional functionality is offered to control messages. Mobile operators can decide to control messages themselves or give subscribers a powerful tool to control messages via short-codes or a Web GUI. Examples of filtering offered via Personalized Services are:

  • Black-White List — Messages originated from a specific MSISDN or short number/alphanumeric address are blocked/allowed based on a personal originator black or white list of the recipient
  • Automatic Black List — Allows to temporarily, or permanently, automatic blacklist a subscriber from sending or receiving messages, based on exceeding certain criteria
  • Quota Filter — Applies quotas to subscribers to reject SMS messages based on the number of messages per day/per hour/per minute duration

In addition to filters, NewNet offers home routing, which allows a mobile operator to take full control of the messages originated from a foreign message center that are addressed to subscribers roaming on a network. This offers a protected environment to any type of subscriber, limiting the risk of getting an infected message or phone entering the mobile operator network.

PJ Louis, CEO of NewNet, said, “This security feature integrates both of our messaging and payment security transaction units to add value added payment solutions for our customers.”

Matt Thompson, NewNet SVP of Corporate Development, said, “This feature provides enhanced security for our new and existing messaging customers.”

For mobile operators to replace millions of old SIM cards is an operational and timely challenge. With NewNet’s SMS Firewall and SMS Personalized Services, mobile operators can address this security flaw from the inside of the network without upgrading millions of handsets, allowing enough time to replace old SIM cards.

To help partners take advantage of new opportunities and niche solutions in the communications market by leveraging NewNet’s mobile messaging and secure transaction platforms, the company offers the NewNet Conexus Partner Program, a flexible, benefits-rich channel partner program to facilitate collective success for NewNet and NewNet partners. Focused on mutual success, the NewNet Conexus Partner Program rewards NewNet partners for their expertise in key technologies and local markets with attractive incentives, innovative products and comprehensive training, as well as professional sales and marketing support.

“We will be actively prepping Conexus partners to engage and deploy globally,” said Rick Landry, global director, channel sales.

NewNet Communication Technologies’ Mobile Messaging Products Help Overcome Obstacles of Legacy SMS Infrastructures

By Rachel Ramsey, TMCnet Web Editor

Do you remember when sending a text message used to require going in and out of the inbox and outbox folders to keep up with a conversation? The capabilities of SMS texting have come a long way, and continue to impact the way we communicate in both our personal and work lives. According to Forrester (NewsAlert), more than six billion SMS messages are sent per day, and text messaging users send or receive an average of 35 messages per day. It’s a key revenue generator for operators as well – SMS averages 25 percent of total revenue.

NewNet (NewsAlert) Communication Technologies, a provider of solutions for next-generation mobile, fixed line networks, messaging and transaction processing, recently attended CTIA, an industry event for mobility executives, developers and innovators, to meet customers and showcase its messaging products, which include the Lithium SMS Router, Lithium SMS Firewall, Lithium SMS Store and Lithium IP Short Messaging Gateway (News  – Alert).

NewNet acquired Tekelec’s Mobile Messaging business in 2012 and has integrated with its product lines. Targeted toward MNOs, MVNOs, inter-carrier and Tier 1 operators, messaging aggregators, system integrators and resellers, NewNet’s messaging products offer flexibility and a rich feature set to customers so they can competitively package their SMS and MMS services to subscribers and customers.

Krishna Viswanadham, chief strategy officer, EVP and GM for mobile messaging business, NewNet Communication Technologies, explained that the products differentiate themselves from competition by offering modularity, flexibility, high scalability, feature richness and using standard OS and hardware.

The Lithium SMS Network is designed to overcome the obstacles of legacy SMS infrastructures and allow operators to deploy new services that increase revenue. Operators can leverage their existing legacy short message service centers (SMSCs) or completely redesign their SMS infrastructures to better meet the demands of today’s SMS subscribers. The NewNet SMS Network presents the actual SMS Data visualized per source and destination application, network and country, including successful and erroneous messages.

The messaging product portfolio includes:

  • NewNet Lithium SMS Router, which enables traffic to be routed on virtually any SMS message parameter, including sender, recipient, SMSC-address, data coding scheme (DCS), mobile switching center (MSC) and message content
  • NewNet Lithium SMS Firewall, which enables operators to respond quickly to changing tactics and techniques to cope with spammers’ resourcefulness.
  • Lithium SMS Store, which enables operators to deliver advanced messaging without costly network over-engineering or overhaul. Operators can grow SMS capacity and capabilities incrementally or create a complete, end-to-end SMS solution while reducing CAPEX and OPEX (NewsAlert) spend.
  • Lithium IP Short Messaging Gateway, which manages the origination and termination of SMS messages between circuit-switched and IP-based networks. Operators can use existing messaging platforms such as SMSCs and MMSCs to deliver IP-based messaging with this product.

“As the SMS messaging business matures and mobile networks evolve to LTE (NewsAlert), NewNet is very focused to be a strong and leading player in the SMS and MMS vendor base,” he said. Viswanadham is especially interested in the messaging side of business; preserving messaging revenue and staying relevant as traffic patterns shift from subscriber revenue-based Person to Person (P2P) models toward Over the Top (OTT), enterprise, Application to Person (A2P) and Machine to Machine (M2M) models.

Matt Thompson, SVP of corporate development at NewNet, said, “We are very excited about what Krishna is accomplishing with the messaging unit. We see a lot of opportunity in our Machine to Machine messaging and messaging gateway products and services.”
